In the image of the burning monk, I think the image in colour gives the fire a much more extreme view as the vibrant burnt orange grabs your attention, not just due to it being at the forefront of the image. The fuel can also becomes more prominent in the coloured picture which makes the scene's action easier to understand.
When a photo is in Black and White you feel there is a distance from reality and it is hard to imagine that it was a real event, it also makes it more of a piece of artwork this could be because of the time period black & white photography was used. When a photo is in colour on the other hand it looks more real and it is easier to connect with, this is why colour photos in some cases can be more powerful such as the monk photo. I like both black & white and colour and in some cases black & white is more powerful such a the explosion on the beach.
The first picture of (the explosion on the beach). I think the black and white version of this photo is more effective rather than the colour version, as it shows greater detail in the black and white rather than the colour version. It is a lot more clearer in black and white as it shows the effects of the explosion. Black and white has more of a dramatic impact.
The use of colour on a photograph can convey a certain emotion to the viewer because the colours can affect a persons mood. It can bring out important features of an image that would normally blend in if it was in black and white such as the image of the burning monk. However the use of black and white photography can also draw focus to a certain thing in the image and have less distractions.
I personally think the second image of the sailor kissing the random girl represents a very strong meaning, It being in colour really brings the image to life and makes it seem more realistic, however I think the black and white version is better because it shows the aging of the image and makes it more understandable with what's going on. In this image you can see that the sailor is happy that the war is finally over so decides to kiss a random girl out of happiness, this caused lots of drama because he didn't know her and it was invading her personal space, bit debates were thrown about because of this image creating history!
The image of the sailor kissing the women could be seen in so many different ways such as; in black and white the photo in generally softer and I think it shows less about the situation than the coloured one. I think this because in the black and white one it looks like just a kiss out of happiness but when it's in colour I think it's more obvious that he's holding her against him with a lot of force, this is mostly shown with his hands. It's quite strange how in the black and white one you can't really see the peoples faces in the background but in the coloured one you can clearly see they are smiling which adds the effect that it is a happy moment, but this is opposite to what's happening in the foreground.
by making the photos colour I feel that nothing has hanged, they still tested the H-bomb, the monk still set himself on fire in protest of Chinese oppression of their religion. All of the things still happened, the meanings are still the same they just look different. The colours are also not true, they are assumed by the person adding the colour back in and it is their interpretation of that moment, although in many cases there is reference material to work off the true colours of that moment are not there. Despite this I don't thank it makes a difference to the meaning of the photos and their historical meaning is still intact just with a modern interpretation layer on top.
i think a black and white photo can sometimes make it have a more historical feel as if it was taking a long time ago for example the colour version of the explosion to me makes it seem more of a recent photo which is why the b&w version is more effective in context to the event which is taking place within the image. Also in the monk photo it really brings out different parts of the photo that I couldn't quite focus on in the black and white such as the fire is a lot more vibrant.
I like the mushroom cloud picture because in black and white it gives it a much more powerful look, It is dark so fits in with the fact that its a bad thing, a bomb. In colour it has a completely different feel. Apart from the mushroom cloud it looks nice, a bright beach with blue water, white sand and palm trees. It takes the focus off of the bomb and onto the rest of the picture as well.
I think that the black and white makes the image seem older which in some circumstances works for example the Picture of Anne Frank seems alot older and more antique adding to the time era that it was taken. However in other circumstances the Colour is more effective because it brings out the vibrancy of the image like in the monk on fire one the fire is really the focal point and emphasises the point of event adding to the meaning.
I think that editing the pictures into colour was such a great idea as we are able to connect with the pictures more as they look more realistic. The bright colours within the picture contrast with each other and it emphasises the meaning to the picture. With the picture of the burning monk, at first i wasn't able to tell what it was, but when it was in colour i was able to understand what was going on. The bright oranges and yellows of the flames grabs your attention as it contrasts with the blue car.
I like all the images in the original black and white format but I think sometimes images that have colour have more power. Specifically the burning monk, the flames in colour make the photo more striking.
In the image of the nuclear bomb testing in the sea I found myself distracted by the foreground in the full colour image because of the detail of the trees etc. despite the subject matter being the explosion. However I think it is more relaistic looking in the coloured image. It's definately made me look at it in a different way as by noticing the details in the front you can tell more about it and the effect of devastation.
In the imae of the monk the colour version is stronger and bolder whereas in the Black and white version it is quite plain and eas to miss details. By using the vibrant colours it provides impact and changes you focal point from being quite bus to having a clear direction.
