Rankin experimenting with the idea of death in a creative and exploritory way as apposed to a morbid and typical portrayal is inspiring.
The photos are intriguingly happy, can be interpreted differently by the audience and the idea of there being beauty in everything - even death- is something that I could explore during my project.
The way death is shown throughout his project is unconventional as death is usually shown as a bad and upsetting time in life. Each of the photos are shown through an optimistic point of view and helps people think about it in a deeper context. I think that i could explore more of this within some of my projects.
Personally I don't see how his photos reflect death but I like the idea of trying to get our country used to death. I think it has a clever title. I also like that he wanted to have a lighthearted element to the exhabotion because it could be increadably depressing
I also find it hard to see how all of his photos reflect death, I only think a few of them do, however I like the idea he has of looking at death in a positive way using colourful photos instead of seeing death as a dark, sad thing.
The way death is represented in Rankins photos is seen in a more optimistic and positive way. Rankin talks about the day of the dead which happens in Mexico every year which is a day to celebrate the lives of their loved ones who have passed away. It is a much better way to think about death, as our country usually tries to pretend that death doesn't happen even though it happens everyday and all around us. I feel that looking beyond something which isn't talked about often as it could be seen as too serious or sensitive and trying to display it in more of a happier and lighter way could help me within my project.
I like how he lets the viewer interpret the photographs differently and that they dont have a specific meaning, even though Death is the theme this is not always the first thing seen when looked at. I like how death is such an everyday thing but no-one ever truly thinks about it and Rankin emphasises it and makes people think about it in a more positive way.
I think that he interprets the photographs as a celebration of life rather than mourning because he didn't want his work to look depressing and he shows death as more of a positive thing.
I personally think that Rankin is opening up a subject that is often thought of as a uncomfortable topic, bringing in different ways of how death is dealt with in different cultures makes it seem more optimistic and interesting as they celebrate and remember the life people have lived, interpreting art and photography within this field gives people a more open minded view on this subject and can give people the opportunity to see it as not just a upsetting thing in life.
i find rankis work inspirational and feel that he has a good interpretation of this subject. also i believe that by expressing this uncomfortable topic through art it makes it easier to accept and think about.
I like how Rankin has looked at quite a morbid subject through another perspective, seeing it as natural and connotes this with beauty. Looking at different views on the same theme or subject will really help me think about experimenting more with my project. Making a subject that people don't usually try to think about as prominent inspiration for a project really shows how powerful art and photograph can be, but also how people all will differ in opinions.
I think it is interesting how Rankin has forced people to think of death because people normally avoid thinking about it. The pictures in this video don't make me think of death but people interpret things in different way. Rankin might of been trying to capture death in a happier way rather than the typical obvious way.
I like how simple the portraits are and how less effects or background in the photo show it is concentrated on the identity and the story behind the face.
Looking at the individual photos i don't quite see how they resemble death, therefore i do like the idea behind the project as i think it is good way to represent a person at such a bad time in there life and takes away the stereotypical connotations of death and focuses on there personality more.
Rankin, included Photography and art to explain what it means to him about depth. He used main experiments in his work and he thought about how people would react to this type of subject. The thing I like about this type of project is he used different types of people in his portraits to express his views and the understanding of depth, he made his work memorable like depth it self. That fact that he included Mexican day of the dead, shows that he researched a different type of culture into how they celebrate depth. Rankin took the influence of depth and made it a more lighter subject, so that people would think about it, not just being sad but a different type of emotion and to open doors to people that don't speak about depth.
I like how the artist has though about the topic of death in dept this is shown throughout his project. I also think that he has displayed his photos in a unusual way (on the wall) this may represent people coming together like a family tree.
I feel that Rankins work although difficult is very powerful as not many artist look at the real meaning of death as well as looking at the people around death. Although, in the video he talks abut how he does not want his work or show to be depressing there fore he tryed to make his work less depressing. In doing so I feel that he has limited himself as he was trying to please the crowd rather than staying true to the theme.
I think Rankin has shown a different insight in to death. The title of his exhibition doesn't relate to his photographs because his images look more contented than what your interpretation of death would be.
I think that the fact that Rankin chose to use death as an influence towards his art is an interesting thing, The fact that he chose to dipslay the pieces in a big heart shape is interesting as in it may mean to keep their hearts beating and keep them warm together. Doing this project i feel that he is trying to make death something to be less scared about and get people more interested in it and possibly learn to embrace it as it is something that everyone will have to face one day.
Rankin portrays death in a creative way rather than thinking of it morbidly as everybody usually does. Although, Rankin himself would have ideas behind his images, allowing viewers to interpret the images how they feel best is a good solution in the creative industries as everybody thinks of death in different ways: either scared of it, or ready for it to come.
The way Rankin has used contrasting images to display death makes us wonder if he is foreshadowing events in those peoples lives. He lets us use our perception to look at these photos and gather an idea from it. His idea looks simple but actually is very in depth and makes us think.
Rankin has presented death in a unusual way, which gives us a different perception of the meaning of death. The use of bright colours and how he displayed the work, creates a more positive feel than death ususally has.
I feel that Rankin is trying to portray death in an unconventional manor, as death is usually seen to be the end, upsetting and morbid. In this interview Rankin mentions the Mexican festival 'Day of the dead' where death is celebrated, I feel that this is what Rankin was trying to achieve with this whole project.
The way Rankin presents death through his work differs from the usual depressing idea of death. His work displays death in a more positive way, so much so that It can be difficult to see how it relates to death at all. If anything he seems to celebrate the life they had rather than only mourning it.
If I saw these pictures without knowing anything about what the theme was I don't think I would think of death up until the ones that use inspiration from the day of the dead. But because I know the title I can see the connections he has made with death and how he wants to interpret it. I like how he is trying to use art to make people think about death, he wants people to think about it and celebrate the memories they make with people, and not the morbid sad side of it.
I understood the relevance to death when Rankin started talking about Day of the Dead masks and relating that to his art work, however the earlier images wouldn't show connotations of death if you looked at them without being captioned. Rankin took a unusual, 'sugar-coated' approach to the topic of death, as some of us imagine death to be grotesque, unpleasant and somewhat uncomfortable - he presents death to be a rememberance of people and the opening image of black and white photographs collaged in the shape of a heart portrays this.
If I didn't know the name of this collection of work I would have no idea what rankins influence was, but as I do I feel that he has represented death in a mixture of ways to show that not everyone sees death with the same attitude. Also the use of unusual colours could represent more positive feelings compared to dark and gritty aspects which are mostly associated with death.

ReplyDeleteI think that Ranking is making the Thought of death more acceptable, by using his art work. but i dont see hoe some of his work reflects death.

Do you think people would view the exhibition differently if you didn't know the title of it?
